It's extraordinarily difficult for someone like me to pick a single favorite painting. So many artists and works have inspired me or left me in awe. Various elements come into play because art in general has such a wide spectrum of concepts and ideas brought about by people with totally different value judgements. That being said, I suppose for the purposes of this blog I still need to pick an example.
Joaquin Sorolla's "La Hora Del Bano" is an incredible piece that leaves me speechless every time I see it. The vivid color and dynamic light bring the painting to life. It evokes images of youth, warmth, and bliss. The painting has a softness and a mixture of cools and warms, though it's the warmer colors that pop out most. The lightest and darkest parts of the painting sit next to each other drawing attention to the central focal point of the picture My mother, who also happens to be an artist, was a big fan of the impressionists and had books full of their works. I always got caught up in this piece. Because Sorolla pairs whimsical color and light with a sharp realism and attention to detail, it strikes a powerful and unique balance that creates an instant emotional response. The painting has this sheer charisma and magnetism. The way the light plays across the water creates a soft diagonal line that leads the eye comfortably through the painting. Soft flowing lines direct the viewer's attention from one area to the next, while the implied lines from the gaze of some of the individual create still another layer of direction, without cluttering the piece. It's compositionally strong with enough value contrast to create significant depth. Geometric shapes while subtle, are still present; specifically triangles. The painting is active and full of motion. I will always have a love and appreciation for this painting. It's been an inspiration and a pleasure.
